SUPPORTIVE OPTION FOR YOU AND/OR YOUR CHILD

Child Centered Play Therapy (CCPT)

Children learn about their world, both inner and outer worlds through play. CCPT is a non-directive mode of counseling where children experience unconditional acceptance of all their emotions - giving them life skills beyond emotional management tools.

WHAT IS CCPT?

A child’s natural language is play

Children learn about their world, both inner and outer worlds through play. CCPT is a non-directive mode of counseling where children experience unconditional acceptance of all their emotions - giving them life skills beyond emotional management tools. Through universal acceptance of all emotions, compassionate limit-setting and curiosity, children learn that they have the inherent tools within themselves to manage whatever situations life throws at them.

CCPT is an excellent counseling tool for children ages 6-12 experiencing anxiety, depression, grief, anger issues, relationship challenges and other mood-related struggles. Compassionate limit-setting can be effective for children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), children struggling with power and control dynamics, and executive functioning challenges. Through the play therapy method, children are given opportunities to learn to manage these challenges as they arise in the play room.

As parents, you can expect to be both involved in your child’s counseling and to practice engaging in appropriate confidentiality for your child. Parents of children engaging in CCPT can expect that their child gets the opportunity to meet with Ms. Becca independently of their parent, for an entire 45-minute session. Parents can expect to meet with Becca about every 6 sessions for progress updates and parenting support. Parenting support is likely to include developing insights into how the household models emotional management among other challenges, and over the course of our relationship, Ms. Becca is likely to make some recommendations. She firmly believes we cannot expect our children to engage in behaviors we are unable or unwilling to engage in ourselves and that modeling is our most effective tool.

CCPT is a non-directive mode of counseling, therefore it may not be a great fit for everyone. CCPT does not include teaching children skills in a directed way, unlike Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). For more information regarding the benefits of CCPT, the National Institute of Health,  Association for Play Therapy and  Play Therapy Podcast, have excellent resources.
